Project: South Thames College

Illumination of the exterior facade of the new Health & Social Care Wing at South Thames College in Wandsworth, London. Designed by architects Scott Brownrigg and constructed by BAM Construction the £100 million opened in Sept 2009.
The exterior lighting underlines the college’s ethos, providing a night-time appearance that is dynamic and stimulating whilst remaining environmentally and socially responsible.

The simple lighting solution belies the technical planning, calculation and product design that were required to execute the design.
Floodlighting  the building but this would caused light pollution and trespass into classrooms and neighbouring residential properties. Instead each structural column on each floor is illuminated via 2No ground recessed uplights. This provides an incredibly high level of controlled illumination preventing any unwanted light into the building and due to the careful positioning all upward light is prevented from going into the atmosphere by the floor & roof above.
