The small commune of Alingsås has created a central event on the lighting calendar and each year pays tribute to the changing season from Summer to Autumn by hosting a lighting workshop organised by the Professional Lighting Designer's Association PLDA. Every September a group of workshop heads lead students and others in designing and assembling a series of events around the town. The residents and visitors then visit all of the sites at the end of the workshop week and over a period of another 3 weeks, it is estimated that in excess of 15,000 visitors travel to the town to witness the interventions and learn from Alingsås how lighting can change people's attitudes towards their environment. The workshops have been extremely effective at helping our profession to raise awareness of how good lighting and a planned infrastructure can enhance a community. Paul Traynor was one of the heads for the 2001 workshop.
