The design team formed of ØKAW architects, Pir II landscape architects, structural engineers Dr. Techn. Olav Olsen, engineers at SWECO and Light Bureau entered Uroboros to the open design competition for an extension to the Viking Age Museum in Oslo.
The proposed extension complements and contrasts the existing cross-shaped museum structure. The space planning of the extension strongly improves visitor flow through the exhibition and its shape creates an additional four open air spaces between the new and the old buildings.
The overall lighting concept is based on the contrast between the warm glow of firelight and vivid sunlight. The lighting quality within the exhibition spaces changes according to the items on display from spaces with low levels of warm light, spaces with high contrasts and vast, bright spaces where ships and outdoor equipment are displayed.
